It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 16

Week 16! Can you believe it? I can’t! This past week I spent a ton of time push mowing our property since our riding mower is down right now. So needless to say I didn’t get any time in the barn. So it was nice to drop the kids off at school this morning and jump behind the lathe!

<—— Check out this week’s video!

5 or 6 years ago I saw a guy advertising free Elm logs on facebook marketplace…so clearly I messaged him and went and picked up several. I got them home (this was at our previous property) and I immediately went to turn a bowl. Much like the cottonwood log I used…this wood had a very particular smell to it. And it wasn’t pleasant. But I’m happy to report that since it’s been drying in my barn…this piece has NO smell! ***Phew***

I started by cutting off some of the cracked end on the Grizzly bandsaw. Then drilled the hole for the woodworm screw so I could get it on the lathe. Getting this squared off piece to an even diameter took a bit of time. I had to keep moving the tool rest to get closer to the parts I’d already turned off. But once I managed to get it to where I wanted…I was off to the races.

As with the other bowls, once I had the outside shape where I wanted it, I turned a foot…then turned the bowl around in the chuck jaws so I could turn out the inside. It always takes a bit of time to turn the insides mainly because I keep stopping to check the wall thickness to make sure there aren’t any overly thick/thin or humps in it.

This piece of wood turned rather nicely…and I absolutely love the coloring of it. And the fact that the grain is so prominent only makes it that much more pleasant to look at! I think I have a few more elm logs hiding in the corner of the barn. Maybe I should dig them out! Hope you all have an amazing week!

I’ll see you all back in the barn next Monday!
