It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 17
Hey everyone! Welcome back to the barn! I spent the last week cleaning and reorganizing the barn…and it was a big job! I tend to go several months between real cleanups. I’m sure if I cleaned the space after every time I was in there…life would be easier. But that’s clearly not how my brain functions. Ha! I’m an artist…so my space is allowed to be messy, right? Yea…we’ll go with that! So that took up a lot of the last week…and it was great walking into the barn today to make today’s project…knowing that I was going to start making another mess!
This morning when I walked into the barn to the stash of logs…it took me longer than normal to figure out which one I wanted to work with. I had a little bit of an idea of what I wanted to make…but couldn’t really find the right log. Then I found it! It’s another piece of maple that I saved from a fallen tree on our last property.
Check out this week’s video! ——->
I started off on the Grizzly bandsaw to make the log a somewhat even thickness…that makes it easier to mount on the lathe. Once on the lathe it was time to get to work. There were a few crack in the center of one end…so I decided to make that the inside of the bowl, knowing I’d turn out the center and cut out the cracks. And it worked!
I knew with this one I wanted it to be either a candy dish or a small fruit bowl, so it needed to have a little pedestal on the bottom. I’ve turned something to this before…but it was much smaller. I’m incredibly happy with the way this turned out! And the grain and coloring is what really makes this entire piece.
Being able to dig into the wood pile that I’ve been hoarding for the better part of 8 years has really been a joy. Finding these logs and figuring out what to make has turned out to be what I’ve been needing. As with everyone…life can be complicated (especially when you add to young kids to the mix), so finding time to do something you love is extremely important. And thankfully…my thing is making things out of wood. And I get to enjoy them until they go to their forever homes!
So what do you all think of this week’s project? Anyone need a Maple Candy Dish/Fruit Bowl?
See you all in the barn next Monday!
