It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 15
Can you believe this is my 15th week sharing something new with you each Monday? I said a while back that I had no idea how long this would last, but honestly I’m not seeing an end in sight! I’m really enjoying being able to get up in the barn and think outside the box each week and pushing myself! And boy oh boy…this week’s project is a stunner!
Check out this week’s video! ————->
About 6 or 7 years ago I picked up some cherry logs from a yard in Snohomish. Throughout the years I’ve made some bowls and spoons from the logs…but I still have several in the log pile. So today I pulled this log out to see what I could make. I knew I wanted to make another large bud vase like the maple one I made a few weeks ago!
I got out my trusty Husqvarna chainsaw and cut the log in half. About halfway through the cut the red dust came flying out of the log. I managed to finish the cut and noticed saw that there was a huge rotted spot in the middle. I cut one half of the log in half before taking it in to the Grizzly bandsaw to finish cutting it down to get ready for the lathe.
I won’t lie…as I was getting this on the lathe I didn’t have high hopes. I thought that the rotted part would be too much and I wouldn’t be able to get as big of a vase as I wanted. So you can imagine my surprise when I not only was able to use that entire piece…but it turns out that the void in part of it only made the vase that much more spectacular!
This piece of cherry is the piece that kept on giving! As I cut the bottom of the vase into the shape I wanted I realized that I was going to need to clear some of the rotted chunks from the void. I also oiled it a bit before doing the final sanding on it…and I couldn’t believe the colors!
Once the bottom of the vase was done, I turned it around to create the neck and top of it, finally using a drill bit to take out the center for some dried flowers. I was so excited to do the final sanding and get oil on the entire thing! The coloring throughout this piece combined with the dark color of the void…I honestly can’t get enough of it! Part of me wants to keep this! But I can’t keep everything I make…or can I? hahaha
I’m excited to get into the other parts of this log to see if I can make anything else from it. Maybe next week? Or maybe I’ll go for something else and see what I can make! Either way…I will enjoy having this vase filled with lavender until I list it to sell!
See you all in the barn next Monday!
