It’s Monday(and my birthday)…let’s make something! ~ Week 12
I’m back from Hawaii (honestly) for today’s project! And it’s a special one because I’m making myself something for my birthday! Happy Birthday to me! (Yes…today is my birthday and I’m in the barn working!)
<——- Check out today’s video!
Today I knew what I wanted to make myself so I searched for the perfect log…and I found this piece of maple! I started by cutting off the cracked ends on the Grizzly bandsaw. Then drilled a hole for the woodworm screw and popped this bad boy on the lathe.
I started by getting the log turned to an even diameter, turned a foot onto one and and turned it around and put the foot in the chuck jaws. This is where the fun begins! (or as the song says “this is where the adventure begins!”) While I knew what I wanted to make, I didn’t know how I wanted the top of the lid to be. And due to the woodworm screw hole, it ended up being completely different than I started out thinking. But that’s what makes all this so fun!
Cutting the lid off this vessel was a LOT more difficult than the lidded vessel I made a few weeks ago! I ended up having to go to our gardening shed to grab the branch cutter! Wood working is all about being resourceful! I finally got the lid off and then it was time to turn the inside.
I am so happy with how this piece turned out! And it’s the perfect birthday gift to myself. As I think about this latest trip around the sun I’m truly grateful to all of you who have supported me over the years. Not just by purchasing items, but by commenting on them, sharing my pictures and post and just motivating me to keep going! I look forward to seeing what the next year has in store for me, and I’m excited to share the journey with you!
See you all next Monday!
