It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 13

This past week I’ve been playing catch up with yard work since we were on vacation. But I was so excited to get in the barn and work on something for today’s project! So let’s get to it! Check out today’s video —->

At the end of the video I say this is spalted alder…but it’s not. It’s the other part of the spalted maple log that I made my fruit bowl out of! It’s always fun to realize these things after you’ve left the barn, edited the video and posted it! ***whoops***

I was able to get this piece onto the lathe as is…no need for the bandsaw or angle grinder! All I needed to do was drill the hole for the woodworm screw and get things rolling.

As I’ve said before, when turning wood like this…the final shape is always determined by the piece itself. I had to remove a lot of this wood because there were cracks on either end. As the video goes on, do you notice the diameter of the bowl get smaller and smaller? Welcome to turning something from a log!

Once the outside of the bowl was the size it needed to be, I turned the foot and flipped it around so I could turn out the inside. It’s fun to watch all those shavings fly from the inside of the bowl! With green wood (wood that is from a tree that was recently cut down and so it still has a lot of water in it) you can get some amazingly long shavings…while simultaneously getting covered in water!

Did you notice the bowl blank I used to hold the piece in place while turning off the foot? I’m telling ya…this thing comes in handy! I had about 5 or 6 of those I got from my friend…and turned all but this one into a bowl! (And they are currently available for sale in my store! ***hint hint***)

The finished bowl shape reminds me of a bathtub. But what bathtub do you know of that has that amazing spalting? I’m so happy that I saved as much wood as I have over the years. And I’m loving digging into the wood piles and making things!

What do you all think of this bowl? What should I make next? Any suggestions?

See you all back in the barn next Monday!
