It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 11
I want to let you in on a little secret…while you are reading this and watching this week’s video…I’m actually with my family in Hawaii. **shhhhhh** Jealous? Do you feel lied to because I didn’t make this item today? If so…sorry that you feel that way, but even a woodworker needs a vacation! And if it makes you feel any better…my kids are not making this trip enjoyable so far! Ha!
But let’s get to this week’s project! Check out this week’s video ——->
Today I grabbed this piece of spalted alder that’s from, you guessed it, a tree that fell on our previous property. Since this wood was already a good size, I was able to skip using the bandsaw and get it on the lathe.
I knew that I wanted this to be a “lop sided” piece so I drilled the hole off center. I started this piece knowing that I needed to redeem myself from last week’s project! So with a little bit more confidence I started cutting.
I really enjoy working with spalted wood because each piece is completely different and unique. And this one was no exception. After turning the shape of the bottom of the bowl, I added a foot and turned it around in the chuck jaws. Turning the inside of bowls is fun to watch. With live edge pieces like this one…it’s where I get to determine the actual shape, or how deep to make it. Putting it on the lathe off center gave this bowl quite a unique shape.
With pieces that are odd shaped I’m not able to use my “Cole Jaws” to hold them while I turn off the foot. So I use this bowl blank given to me by a friend. It’s perfectly rounded and smooth on the bottom so it won’t leave any marks on the inside of whatever piece I’m working with. Have you noticed it in any of my other videos?
Well…I think it’s time for me to get back to the beach.
I’ll see you all back in the barn next Monday! I promise!
