It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 4

I’ve had these maple boards lying around the barn for about a year. I originally planned to rip them and create some cutting boards…but clearly that never happened. So today I decided to try something a little different! Check out the video!

I started by cutting out a rough circle on my Grizzly bandsaw and made my way over the lathe. It was interesting for me to work with a piece this “shallow,” if that makes sense. I’ve made large platters before, but the piece of wood I started with was always at least 3” thick. This board is less than an inch…so there was little to no room for error!

Once I got the first plate done…I decided to go ahead and make the second plate! Honestly…this was a lot of fun, and it is making me want to make more with maple…and even some out of cherry and walnut! What do you think?

I cant wait to get back into the barn next week and see what comes from it! As always, I hope you are enjoying this series as much as I am!

See you next Monday!

Hey! Welcome back to the wood shop! Last week’s item was fun to make (if not a little terrifying)…so I decided to go ahead and turn the other half of that cherry log! I am extremely happy with how it turned out! I left a lot LESS of the live edge on this one…leaving the beautiful color of the cherry wood to shine through! What do you think? It’s crazy to look at the two pieces side by side and realize they are literally two sides of the same log!

Now on to this week’s “It’s Monday…let’s make something!”
