It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 3
Another week has flown by and it’s time for me to get back into the barn and make something!
At the end of last week one of our neighbors told me he cut down a cherry tree and an apple tree on his property. He wondered if I wanted any of the wood. And as an good woodworker knows, you NEVER turn down free wood…no matter how many logs you currently have. I have friends who are quilters…and they have this same mentality when it comes to buying or acquiring more fabric. Hahaha!
Today I decided to pull a log from the pallet of logs that I got from my neighbor. I started on the Grizzly bandsaw, cutting the long in half lenghtwise…and then put it on the lathe. Check out the video! ———->
I won’t lie…it’s terrifying to have a normal round piece of wood on the lathe turning at high speeds. But when you put something oval shaped on…it’s basically a propeller!
I knew the shape I was going for…but I didn’t know how much of the “live edge” I wanted to leave on the piece. I decided to leave quite a bit, mainly because the contrasting colors of the cut wood to the live edge was so amazing! And when it was oiled…it just popped!
This is the first time I’ve tried this shape on this big of a piece of wood. So I was pushed way out of my comfort zone. I have the other half of this log that I want to toss on the lathe later this week and see if I can go even further with it!
When I started this series three weeks ago…I knew I was going to push myself to do things I hadn’t mustered up the courage to try. This shape was definitely a push…but I now know what I’ll do differently next time. So I can’t wait to see what the other half of this log will turn out to be!
What do you think of this weeks creation?
See you next Monday!
