It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 5

This last week flew by! Sadly I didn’t get any time up in the barn because the weather was nice, which meant I had a ton of yard work to do. But such is the life of a property owner, right? Gotta get things done when it’s not raining up here in the Pacific Northwest!

Today I made my way to the barn to start a new project. I usually stand in there looking at all the different logs and such that I have and see which one is calling to me the loudest. And today…the call was coming from the pallet of wood from my neighbor.

The day I went down to pick out some of the logs from his property…I noticed one in particular because it had a burl on the side of it. If you’re not familiar with a burl, it’s usually a big knob looking thing on the side of a tree where the tree suffered some sort of an injury, but it can also be from some sort of viral or fungal infection. No matter what caused it…burl wood is some of the most interesting wood to look at! I’ve used a lot of walnut burl wood in the past, and I won’t lie, it’s not cheap to buy! But I lucked out with this log!

<————- Check out today’s video!

Today I pulled out the Husqvarna chainsaw to cut the burl off the main part of the log. Then I took it to the Grizzly bandsaw to get it ready to put on the lathe. I knew I wanted to make some sort of a bowl while leaving quite a bit of the live edge. I’ve not worked with a cherry burl before, but I can’t even begin to tell you how beautiful this was while turning…and I couldn’t wait to oil it! I left some of the moss on the edge of the bowl as well…extra character. Another quirk about this bowl is a chainsaw mark on the underside! I could have cut that off while turning it…but I thought it just added to it’s uniqueness!

Now let me explain what happened during filming. I’m a one man show…and I tend to stop and start the recording that way it’s broken up into smaller chunks, which makes it easier to edit. Well…I thought I hit record when I went to turn the inside of the bowl…but I clearly hit stop recording. So there’s no footage of me turning the inside of the bowl. And I didn’t find that out until I went to stop the recording before going on to the next part. And at that point…I can’t put the wood back together haha! So I decided to make a sign! We have to laugh at ourselves in these moments!

I’m incredibly happy with how this little bowl turned out! What do you think?

See you next Monday!
