It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 2
Welcome back! I had such a fun time last week getting into the barn, jumping behind the lathe and turning that small maple bowl! It was a little intimidating creating that first reel, editing down 40+ minutes of footage into 90 seconds is quite a trip! But I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Well let’s get week 2 started!
Today I grabbed a spalted alder log from my wood stash. This is from an alder tree that fell across the driveway of our previous property. I started off on my Grizzly bandsaw to cut the log into a piece I could get on the lathe. From there…well…check out the video! ———->
I’ve seen several woodworkers that I follow make these bud vases. I’ve always thought they were interesting…and planned to make some at some point. But as with most things, I never got around to making any. Until today!
One of the things I love about woodworking, especially on the lathe, is that you never really know what the wood will look like or what your finished piece will look like. What I mean by that is…sometimes there are knots in the wood or a crack, and because of that you have to take more off than you initially planned. I don’t have a “signature style” when it comes to the bowls I make…I generally let the wood tell me what it wants to look like. (Or sometimes I get a little heavy handed and the final shape is more of a correction haha)
This little bud vase is the first of what I can only imagine will be many! In the future…maybe I’ll make some bigger vases and try and figure out a way to get them to hold water. But until then…dried buds only for this little guy!
See you next Monday!
