It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 40

Happy New Year! And it’s Week 40 of this little thing I started on a whim! And while there are honestly some weeks that I’ve not wanted to get up into the barn and make something, having this project to force me…really helped me stay with it! So I hope that you have enjoyed it as much as I have!

Check out today’s video! ——>

Today I walked up to the barn knowing that I still had a few of the Hawaiian Koa wood bowl blanks left. So I grabbed the smallest one and got to work! I started by finding the center, marking it and then drilling a hole for the woodworm screw. Then I mounted the blank to the lathe, pulled up the tailstock and started to work on the outside of the bowl. I started with a cut to level the bottom and find the diameter of the foot. I measured it and then turned the foot.

As with any square blank, I needed to make it completely round before I could really do anything. Once I do that I’m able to figure out the shape. I knew this was going to be a shallower bowl, but I wanted it to have a nice curve and a bit of a foot on the bowl itself. So I started making my cuts, stopping along the way to check the shape. Once I had it where I wanted it, I sanded it, oiled it, sanded some more and then used some of the wood shavings to help give it a little polish and shine!

Then I flipped the blank over in the chuck and set to work on the inside. I love these smaller bowls because they go quickly, but I find its easier for me to mess them up because I tend to go a little quicker. I won’t lie, I was a little worried that I turned the bottom on the outside a little too deep and I was going to end up with a funnel instead of a bowl! But thankfully…I hadn’t gotten overzealous while shaping! So I worked my way down inside the bowl. Again, stopping every so often to check wall thickness, and base thickness. Once it was good…sanding, oiling, sanding and using some of the wood shavings were all done again.

I popped the bowl into the cole jaws so I could remove the foot, sanded and oiled it and it was done! Truly, these Hawaiian Koa wood bowls are always so pretty. Each one is so unique because of the grain, color and just beauty of the wood itself. And its a joy to turn them…and I want to keep them all…but then I’d have a house full of bowls and no money in my business bank account! So…this will be for sale along with the others once they are all done!

So what do you guys think? I wish you all an amazing year, and I’ll see you all back up in the barn next Monday!
