It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 21

I did something bad this week…I went to Woodcraft. ***sigh*** Now you might be wondering why that’s such a bad thing, it’s because they had walnut burl and claro walnut burl. That bin ALWAYS gets me into trouble. Okay…enough of that! Let’s get on to this week’s project! I actually used a piece of that walnut burl wood that I bought and knew what I wanted to make with it! Check out today’s video! ——>

I was in awe of the pieces that I picked up from Woodcraft and knew exactly what I wanted to use this piece for. If this was a thicker piece I would have rounded off the corners on the bandsaw…but I was able to just get this one right on the lathe.

I started out by drilling a whole for the woodworm screw then mounted it to the lathe. The first thing I did was start to even out the bottom and turning the foot. Then I moved on to taking off the corners and then rounding out the blank itself. Once it was round I was able to figure out the shape of the bowl/dish itself. I wanted to keep as much of this wood as possible, so I made the curve as close to the edge as I could. Once the shape was done I started sanding. And when I added the first bit of oil, that’s when it really started to pop! You canNOT go wrong with walnut burl!

After sanding/oiling the outside I turned the blank around so I could turn out the inside. Since this was such a shallow dish/bowl it didn’t take me too long, but getting that inner curve and equal wall thickness can be tricky with this shallower pieces. But I left the bottom a little thicker so it would feel a little more solid. Now it was time to sand and oil the inside. Again…I can’t even stand it. Pictures and videos do not do this wood justice, the colors and waves in it are just magical in person!

I turned the blank around and got it into the cole jaws to turn off the foot, sanded and oiled it and it was done. This was a little bit of a quicker project than some of the others, but its not any less stunning. In fact…I think this might be one of the favorite pieces from this series! What do you think?
