It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 20
I have to say that I’ve been slacking when it comes to getting up into the barn to make things on days other than Monday! As the summer comes to a close we’ve been busy preparing our oldest to go to kindergarten next month. And we finally got some rain…it came with thunder and lightning, both of which aren’t super common here! So it’s been a fun week!
This morning I walked up into the barn and had no idea what I was going to make. I walked around and around the wood stash I have, picked up several things and put them back down. Nothing was really speaking to me, mainly because I didn’t want to make something I’ve done already. But honestly, this is week 20 and there are only so many things I can make for the first time! Ha!
I finally settled on this beautiful piece of wood that I purchased a while back to cut and make into a small serving board…at least I think that’s what I bought it for. Who really know!?! Anyways…check out this week’s video ——>
Because this was already a good size and shape I didn’t need to fire up the Grizzly bandsaw. I drilled the hole for the woodworm screw and popped it on the lathe. Making bowls is one of my favorite things to do because I never really know what shape I’m going to do. I always let the wood dictate what happens. After smoothing out the bottom I cut the foot and then rounded off the blank. Then it was time to shape it. I’ve never done a bowl with a little bit of a thicker lip edge like this. And as I was cutting and stopping to check things I realized that this bowl was going to be beautiful because of the coloring of the wood!
Once the outside was shaped, sanded and oiled I flipped it over and turned out the inside. This part is always a little dicey for me. Trying to get the inside smooth can sometimes be a little bugger, especially if I press too hard on a pass and leave a gouge! It’s not a problem until I have the bowl close to its final thickness…and that seems to be when I do it! haha. But this time I managed to get it just right!
Once the inside was turned, sanded and oiled it was time to put the cole jaws on so I could turn off the foot and sand/oil the bottom. Nothing is more satisfying that holding your finished bowl in your hand and cleaning it up. I’m incredibly happy with this bowl! I love the shape and coloring…and I know that whoever ends up with it will love it just as much as I do!
Hopefully this week I’ll get back up in the barn. I need to get some spoons made to restock my store! Hope you all have a great week! I’ll see you back in the barn next Monday!
