It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 19

Week 19! It’s been a week full of yark work and spending time with the kids…and so today it was wonderful to get into the barn. Most weeks I walk into the barn not really knowing what I’m going to make. But this week…I had plenty of time to think when I was push mowing our property. So when I walked into the barn I was on a mission to find the right piece of wood that would work for what I had in mind.

<——- Check out today’s video!

I picked out this maple log that was from a tree that fell on our previous property…man alive…I’m not going to be able to say that much longer with as much of this wood as I’m using! Ha! But I’m happy that this is all finally getting used up! I needed a longer piece of wood that didn’t have any cracks for a good portion of it. And luckily…I had one!

I started off on the Grizzly bandsaw to cut the log to size, then cut the remaining piece down for the other part of the project. Then it was off to the lathe. I just needed to turn a foot on the bottom because I wanted to leave the outside of this “live edge.” So with respects to the outside of it…it was a little easier than making a bowl! Once that was done, I turned it over and started to turn out the inside. I needed to make sure I left enough of a rim so that it wouldn’t crack when being used. Oh…maybe I should say I made a mortar and pestle!

Once the inside was turned out, sanded and finished…I took it back to the bandsaw and cut the bottom off so it was the perfect height. Then I set to work on the pestle. In the end, I wish that I’d made the pestle a little bit longer, but I’m super happy with how it turned out. Once I had the shape I wanted I sanded it, then took it to the bandsaw to cut off the ends. Then it was time to sand the ends “rounded.

I’ve been thinking about making a mortar and pestle set for quite some time. And now I have the itch to make a much larger one! I just need to find the perfect log for it! What do you all think?

See you in the barn next Monday!
