It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 14
I’m not sure what the weather is like in your neck of the woods…but around here it’s been HOT! I’ve not spent much time up in the barn due to the heat…but I’m happy I was able to get in there early this morning and get today’s project made!
<——— Check out today’s video!
Today I grabbed this half log that I’ve had for several years. My dad brought the log out from Montana, it’s from a cottonwood tree in his back yard that he had to have removed. With the other half I turned a bowl for my dad…and it sits on the counter at their place they have on Lake Sakakawea. I actually got to see it this past May when we went to visit!
Turning that bowl wasn’t very enjoyable. It was green wood, so I was covered in water. But that’s not what I didn’t like. I had no idea that wet cottonwood smelled like a mucky and muddy stockyard. Do you all know what a stockyard is? It’s where they bring cattle, pigs, sheep, horses to sell them. And they don’t have the most pleasant smell. So imagine being showered in water that smells like that. Not fun.
But, much to my surprise, with this piece today…it was dried enough that the smell had dissipated! And there was no water spraying at me…so that helped!
I’m so incredibly happy with this bowl! I love the shape…but i REALLY love the color variations on it! I’ve held onto this half log for such a long time, and hesitated to use it because I remembered the smell. But boy am I glad I pulled it off the shelf today! I’ve said this before, but its worth repeating…one of the reasons I love working with wood is because you never know what you’re going to get from a piece of wood until you start cutting it. As I watched the colors and grain start to pop as I cut…the smile under my mask grew!
I love this bowl…how about you?
See you all back in the barn next Monday!
