It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 10
This past week I’ve been busy in the barn making things! I made a bunch of olive serving trays and even a few small bowls. But the most exciting thing was getting to use my new branding iron! Check out my post from June 1st!
But let’s talk about what I made today! I won’t lie…after I finished making this item I wasn’t very happy with it. Whenever I make something I see all the flaws, the things I did wrong and I can sometimes focus on that. But what I realized is that this is all part of the process. I tend to forget that detail. How can you become better without trying and failing? And that’s not to say that this week’s project was a failure…because it wasn’t.
<—— Check out this week’s video!
I’ve had this piece of maple for quite some time…and it’s developed some amazing spalting! I started with the Husqvarna chainsaw, and then busted out the angle grinder and my arbortech turboplane to make a flat spot for the woodworm screw. Once I did this I was able to get the piece on the lathe.
I’ve done some smaller “square bowls” before, but working with something this size was intimidating. I said at the end of the video that the marks on the bowl were from me hesitating. I’ve noticed that when I’m not confident in what I’m doing, I can see it in whatever I’m making. These marks are what kept me from being happy with myself and the piece.
As you could see, I tried to sand these marks out, but there are too many and they are too deep. But I have to say…marry someone who says something like “You’re too hard on yourself. That bowl is amazing! You’re the only one who notices those. I say we keep it an use it as a fruit bowl.” That helped turn things around in my head. And I’m happy to use this as a fruit bowl.
When I look at this piece sitting on the counter I still see all the “hesitation marks,” but I no longer dislike the piece. It reminds me that in order to grow…we need to make mistakes…or as Bob Ross said, “We don’t make mistakes…we have happy accidents!”
What do you all think of this piece?
See you all next Monday!
