It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 7

This week, much like the last few, has been full of yard work. Mainly I’ve been planting dahlia tubers! Not sure if you know this about me, but I’m also a brand ambassador for American Meadows. Over the last few years I’ve put in a “mini-meadow,” last year I put in a massive lavender bed along my driveway. And this year my project is dahlias. I put in 4 large flower beds out front of our house last year…and after the lavender bed, mini meadow and these four massive beds…I never want to dig sod again! Oof! But I truly enjoy getting my hands in the dirt and adding beauty to our yard. It’s another one way that I relax and unwind…much like woodworking!

But enough of that…let’s get on to this week’s “It’s Monday…let’s make something!” Can you believe its already Week 7? When I started this I didn’t know how it would go…and if anyone would even be watching…but I’ve been encouraged by all the comments on Instagram and Facebook!

This week I went to my wood pile and grabbed a maple log that I’ve had hanging out in the barn for MANY years. It’s actually from a maple tree that came down on our previous property! If you haven’t been able to tell…we had quite a few trees come down at our other property…and I managed to salvage as much of those trees as I could!

<——— Check out this week’s video!

I decided to put this entire log onto the lathe. I started off at the Grizzly bandsaw, taking off several inches from each end where the wood had cracked during the drying process. Then it was time to get it on the lathe. When I started turning I decided to make it into a large bud vase. I made that small one during Week 2…and in the days following I made quite a few more out of walnut burl! And they sold like hot cakes! So thanks to all of you who purchased them!

As I started removing the bark and turning this log I was so thoroughly excited to see the different colors in the wood! And the grain was just amazing! I’m going to keep this one for a while to make sure that it dries properly and doesn’t crack. And I plan to enjoy having it in my house, possibly with some lavender in it. Just like the smaller ones, this can only be used for dried flowers (or in the case of lavender…cut lavender that I’ll dry in the vase). I still need to figure out how to make these vases able to hold water. What do you all think of this week’s project?

See you all next Monday!
