It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 6
The sun is shining here in the Pacific Northwest…so again I’ve been out in the yard getting things done. But it’s also Teacher Appreciation Week at my kids’ preschool…so for this week’s project I wanted to do something for each of their teachers and classroom helpers.
For the past several years, for Teacher Appreciation Week and Christmas, I’ve made something for each of the teachers. I’ve made cherry spoons and spatulas and for Christmas I turned some wooden ornaments. So this year I wanted to do a little bowl for each of them. I took my kids to Rockler Woodworking in North Seattle and let them pick out seven of the smaller bowl blanks. They chose a couple of Purpleheart blanks, Canarywood, Teak and even a Cherry wood blank.
Check out this week’s video! ———->
I’ve made a bunch of these bowls in the past and sold them as “Salt Bowls.” But in all honesty…they can be used for just about anything! I love that I can get them in all types of wood as well! When I’m doing a bunch of the same items, I batch them. With these bowls I turned the outside of each one, then turned the insides of all of them and finally turned off the foot of each one. I find that doing it this way I get into a bit of a rhythm and time tends to fly!
You’ll notice about halfway through turning the insides of the bowls that I’m suddenly wearing a bandaid. While sanding one of the bowls I pushed my thumb into the rim of the bowl and it just sliced into the end of my thumb! I bled like a stuck hog! It happened quickly, and I knew exactly what happened. I stopped the lathe, stopped the camera and went down to the house and cleaned up my thumb. It took a while to get it to stop bleeding, but when it finally did I put some liquid bandaid on it (and that shit BURNS!). That along with a real bandaid over the top was enough to get me through the rest of the bowls!
I’m so happy with how these bowls turned out…each one is totally unique in shape and color. I hope the teachers love them as much as I do. What do you all think? Would you be happy to be gifted one of these? After I made these bowls, I let the boys pick out which one they wanted for each of their teachers and helpers.
Now I have to think about what I’ll be making each of them for Christmas this year. Thankfully I have quite a bit of time to figure something out! Maybe that’ll be “It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 37!
See you all next Monday!
