It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 27

It’s a beautiful morning here in the Pacific Northwest! And its Week 27 of “It’s Monday..let’s make something!” This week I got into the barn and finally used that piece of walnut burl that cost me an arm and a leg!

<——-Check out today’s video!

I’ve been wanting to cut into this piece since I bought it. But also knowing that I wanted to make sure that I did this gorgeous piece of walnut burl justice! Instead of just putting the entire block onto the lathe, I decided to cut out a round blank, that way I could use the scraps for other things! (Look for that in the future!!)

Once I traced out the circle, I cut it out on the grizzly bandsaw. Then I drilled a hole for the woodworm screw so I could mount the blank to the lathe. I didn’t want to take too much off the outside of the bowl, so I just rounded out the edge and then cut the foot that would hold the bowl in the chuck jaws. After I shaped the outside of the bowl, I sanded, used the air compressor to blow out any dust, oiled and then used wood shavings to act as a natural polish for the outside. Then it was time to turn the bowl over and cut out the inside.

I won’t lie, ever since I started turning bowls I think that walnut burl is my absolute favorite wood to make a bowl out of. It’s so incredibly unique…and honestly pictures or videos can’t really capture the true beauty of the piece. Any time someone has purchased a bowl or other item from me that was made from walnut burl they’ve always contacted me to say that it’s even more stunning in person!

Once I finished turning the inside of the bowl, I sanded, blew out any dust, oiled and used wood shavings again. Then it was time to put the bowl in the cole jaws and turn off the foot. And just like the two previous steps…this one ended with sanding, blowing off dust and oiling!

I’m so incredibly happy with how this bowl turned out! And honestly…whoever ends up with it will be as well! What do you all think?

See you back up in the barn next Monday!
