It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 26

How can another week have already flown by? It’s honestly crazy how fast this year is flying by! It’s already Week 26!! And I won’t lie…the piece of wood I worked with today has been calling my name for quite some time!

Check out today’s video! ——->

This piece of cherry is part of the log that I used to make the cherry vase a while back…and I’ve been itching to get back to it! First thing I did was cut it to size on the Grizzly bandsaw. Then drilled a hole in one end for the woodworm screw. Once on the lathe I worked on rounding the blank out. I knew this piece would take a gentler touch that most because it has a lot of cracks and the section that is rotted (but that’s why I loved it!)

Once I rounded the piece out, I started getting the basic shape of the vase…then turned the foot that would go into the chuck jaws. Once those were done it was time to turn the vase around. Once securely into the chuck jaws I was able to go a little harder with my cuts and really dialed in the shape I was looking for.

At one point, I had a chunk of the rotted wood fly off the lathe whiz past my head! When working with a lathe, you always have to remember how much power is in front of you…and never take that for granted. Once the shape was down, it was time to sand. Because of the rotted section, I knew I wouldn’t be able to sand the way I normally would. So I got out the orbital sander…and I worked my way through the grits. I then wiped it down with Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil and did some wet sanding. Once the main part of the vase was sanded I removed the tail stock and shaped the lip of the vase. Then came time to drill out the center. Knowing that the bottom of the vase that was in the chuck jaws had several cracks, I wanted to be extremely careful so it didn’t bind up and send the vase flying! I managed to get the center drilled out, then did a finishing cut on the lip of the vase and sanded it.

In order to remove the foot, I took it back over to the Grizzly bandsaw. Then sanded the bottom and oiled the vase.

This one took me a lot longer than expected. I had about 75 minutes of video footage to edit down into less than 1 minute and 30 seconds…hence the reason this post is so late today! What do you all think of the vase?

I’ll see you back in the barn next Monday!
