It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 28
This last week I’ve been in and out of the barn working on a ton of spoons! So it was nice to get into the barn this morning and work on today’s project! Check out today’s video! ——>
It’s been a while since I’ve made one of these…but I have a few of the hardware sets so I was excited to get one made! I pulled out a piece of Olive Wood, that is from Israel. I’ve made a few of them out of this, and it’s honestly such beautiful wood!
First thing I did was mark the size of the inner tube and cut the blank to size on the Grizzly bandsaw. Then I took it over to the drill press and drilled a hole down the center. Once those were done I used some lower grit sandpaper to rough up the tube that way the CA glue would hold onto it when it was put in place.
Working on crochet hook sets or pens…you need a mandrel for the lathe. I put the blank on this, and then it was time to get to work. Much like everything else…I let the wood dictate it’s final shape. And making these can go pretty fast…but each cut I make is intentional. I started by rounding out the blank, then I was able to start cutting it to its final design. After I had the shape down, it was time to sand and oil the handle.
The hardest part of making these is inserting the “top cap” and the metal piece that holds the hook in place. When I first started making these I ruined several of the caps and SO many of the metal pieces. But I got both of these in place without too much trouble! Thankfully!
I really enjoy my crochet hook set that I made for myself. I started out by using the stock metal hooks that always made my hand cramp up. The wooden handle on this sits nicely in your hand and is warm. Plus the oils from your skin continuously keep it looking great!
What do you all think? Any crocheters in your life? See you back up in the barn next Monday!
