It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 9

You guys…I’m really excited about this week’s “It’s Monday…let’s make something!” I think this has to be one of the Top 5 favorite things I’ve made! As per usual…I had no idea what I was going to make when I walked into the barn. I’ve had this piece of maple for many years…again…it’s from a tree that fell on our previous property.

I started on the Grizzly bandsaw, cutting off the ends where the wood cracked while drying. Then I popped this bad boy on the lathe. Even at this point I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to make. But once I turned it on and started cutting, I realized that I wanted to try something that I’ve been wanting to make for quite some time!

Check out this week’s video! ————->

Once I dialed in on what I wanted to make I immediately got to work. Once I had the entire piece the same diameter it was time to turn a foot on it and get that end into the chuck jaws. Then it was time to turn the lid. What I cut out of this video was all the footage of me trying to figure out what too I wanted to use and how I was going to accomplish this!

Once I had the lid and it’s handle done, it was time to cut it off and then turn the inside of the vessel. I had to stop several times to make sure that the inner wall of the vessel didn’t get to thin. If it did, the lid wouldn’t sit right on it.

After that it was time to put turn that foot off the bottom. For that I needed my “Cole Jaws” which hold on to the bowl with rubber buffers. I use this for all my bowls.

Honestly…I am super impressed with my first attempt at a lidded vessel. I have a lot of room for improvement…but I love how this one turned out.

I’m still amazed at the fact that not even two hours before I started this video…this was a log in a pile in the corner of my barn. To those of you who have been following along, what’s been your favorite thing I’ve made? And do you have any suggestions as to what I should attempt next?

See you all next Monday!
