Walrus Oil Finishing Products
As a woodworker I’ve tried almost every finish for my rolling pins, cutting boards, bowls and other creations. Most of them get the job done. Some are expensive and promise certain results, while others are a bit cheaper but feel like they are more promising. It’s rare that you find a product that becomes your go to for almost every single project. And even more rare, is when that company expands its product base to incorporate even more of the projects that you’ll be tackling in the future.
Before I go any further I should say that Walrus Oil did send me some products for free to try out and write this blog post about. But that being said I’ve been using their products for over a year and would have (and SHOULD have) written this blog post without the free products because I am a believer in their products.
I found out about the company Walrus Oil through a fellow woodworker’s Instagram account. I immediately wondered, like many I’m sure, if it was made from walrus. But fear not…”No Walrus Harmed”! As I delved deeper into their Instagram account and then their website I decided to see if anywhere local sold it. I picked up my first bottle of Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil on August 27, 2018. I immediately started using it to finish all the bowls that I was turning and it did NOT disappoint!
So what is Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil made of? It’s a blend of Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Pure Mineral Oil and Vitamin E. This mixture is a natural and food safe way to finish any of your cutting boards, bowls, spoons or any other wooden item you have. As I said, it’s my go to finish when I’m getting any of my products ready to ship to their new homes!
As you can see in the video to the right, I’m finishing this elm wood bowl with Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. Look how the coloring and grain of the wood pops when its oiled up!
I could go on an on about the Cutting Board Oil, but what I really want to touch on is the furniture oil and wax that was included in the box.
A few years ago we purchased a new coffee table from a big box store, and the wood came raw and unfinished. I’ve been trying to figure out what to use to seal it, but never got around to buying anything. Enter Walrus Oil. I applied the Walrus Oil Furniture Finish with a soft cloth and watched as the wood sucked it up, and in the process the grain, knots and overall texture of the wood started to pop. I applied two coats of the furniture finish, making sure to go over the parts that soaked it in the first time. I set the table aside and let it dry for about 32 hours before applying the Walrus Oil Furniture Wax. I applied this with my fingers, allowing the heat from my hands to soften the wax making it easier to apply. After about an hour I buffed away the excess which left the coffee table feeling soft and smooth! I allowed the wax to dry and cure for another day before putting anything on top of it…and much to my surprise and happiness, it didn’t transfer to the other items.
I loved how this coffee table looked in its raw, unfinished state, but honestly, the way Walrus Oil transformed it only makes it stand out more in our living room.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, I was sent these products for free, but I’ve been using the Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil for over a year and am a huge believer and supporter of this company. Being able to try out the Furniture Finish and Wax was truly a treat, and I fully stand behind these products as well. If you are looking for the right finish to apply to a piece in your home, check out Walrus Oil and you won’t be disappointed!
Head on over to Walrus Oil and check out their products! Not only do they have wood finishing products, they now make lip balm and beard oil! I’m going to have to get my hands on some of that lip balm!
And you can check out my Instagram feed to verify that I have been using it since August of 2018!
