It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 47
How is it already the end of February?!? Somehow it is…and we are at Week 47 of “It’s Monday…let’s make something! We had a stomach bug work it’s way through our house over the last week or so…and then some crazy weather last night. I honestly didn’t know if we’d have power today! Thankfully we do, but the weather is suppose to get crazy again later today. So time to batten down the hatches!
Check out today’s video! ——->
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been up in the barn…and I won’t lie…I’m not ready to make a massive mess after my cleaning day a while back! So I decided to use the Grizzly bandsaw to make something. I knew I wanted to make a bandsaw box…but I needed to find the right piece of wood. I found this piece of spalted maple in my stash and I knew it’d be perfect.
I used the bandsaw to take off the bottom of the log so it was able to sit level. Then I cut off the angled top piece. To make a box you then need to cut off the top and bottom of the box. And then cut out the core of the box. I knew I wanted to make a big enough box so I could use the core to make a second one!
Out of that initial core, I cut off the top, that would be the piece that would be reattached to the “lid” of the big box. Then I cut the bottom and top off the core, and cored that piece as well. It’s so nice to have a bandsaw that makes projects like this easy!
Once everything was cut out it was time to sand everything. I wanted to make sure that everything fit together, so I needed to sand some of the edges to make things slide into place easily. After everything had its initial sanding…I started to glue together the biggest box. Once all the pieces were in place I moved on to the littler box. After gluing the lid together and the bottom onto it…I realized that I did this one “upside down.” Whoops. So instead of nesting into the bigger one right side up…it went in lid down. Oh well…that’s what makes this all unique…right? That’s what I’ll tell myself.
Once everything was glued into place I gave everything a final sanding. I needed to hand sand some of the parts on the inside walls of both boxes. And then I oiled the smaller box since It wasn’t covered in bark like the bigger one.
Looking back on where I started my woodworking journey…I honestly had no idea that I’d be using these logs to make the things I do. It’s taken years for me to build up my arsenal of tools and the cautious confidence to use them. It’s one of the reasons I love “Make Something Monday…” I’m constantly forced out of my comfort zone!
So what do you all think of today’s project? See you all back up in the barn next monday!
