It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 46
Hey guys! Welcome back for week 46! We’re quickly coming up on a year of making these videos after getting a new logo and redesigning my website! Crazy!
<—- Check out today’s video!
It’s been raining off and on the past few days, which I’ll take because it means things are not freezing overnight canceling school! It’s the little things in life that truly keep a parent going, am I right?
Today I decided to stay down in the garage and do another fun project on the laser. With the XCS software I have access to a TON of files that people have created…and I saw this one yesterday and decided to give it a shot for today. I knew that I wanted to use some of the walnut plywood I have…because everything looks better in walnut!
Unlike the last few projects I’ve done on the laser, I didn’t have to create this design, so that cut quite a bit of time off the project. All I needed to do was put the plywood into the lathe, measure the distance and then mark off the area. Once all that was done I was able to resize the project to fit in the marked area.
The great thing about XCS is that they have a whole list of material parameters built in, so most of the times the correct cut/engrave/score settings are already in place. I bumped up the speed a little for this one though. Then it was time to frame the project…to make sure everything fit. I love hitting the process button because it shows you the path the laser will take and also give you how much time it’s going to take! Again…I was happy that this was a rather quick project.
Once I was happy with everything…it was time to let the laser do it’s job. Now…I spaced out turning on the air purifier…so I had to pause the job, get the purifier on and then resume the project. It’s a little alarming to see that much smoke inside the machine…it lets you know right away that the air purifier isn’t on!
Once the job was done I pulled everything out, did a dry fit and then I was ready to glue it together. I use CA glue and an activator to make it dry immediately. I think what I like most about the laser projects is that I don’t have to sand anything! It makes everything that much more enjoyable!
So what do you think of this little box? Several weeks ago I made a box for the wizarding wands…and now I’m wondering if I could design a box similar to this…but longer clearly…for them! I might have to give that a try!
Hopefully next week I’ll be back up in the barn working on the lathe. I won’t lie…after cleaning up the barn I’m not that excited to get it all messy quite yet!
Hope you all have a great week! And we’ll see you back up in the barn next Monday!
