It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 35

Okay…it’s a CHILLY Monday morning here in the Pacific Northwest! Finally getting some good frosts around here! Things have gotten back to normal after the big bomb cyclone that hit us a few weeks ago! But we had Thanksgiving last week, which is always a good time…I mean…who doesn’t love to eat!?! And the weather has been dropping here, which will make it interesting when I need to get up into the barn! But hey…we power through for Make something Monday!

So check out today’s video! ——>

I won’t lie, this isn’t what I intended to make…the first thing I started making actually broke apart and flew off the lathe. But it was only a small piece of driftwood that I picked up this summer by my parents’ lake house. Well, apparently it didn’t want to be turned into an ornament. So it was easy enough to pivot! I grabbed this figured maple bowl blank that I purchased a while back from Rockler Woodworking in Seattle.

I started by marking the center and then drilling a hole for the woodworm screw on the drill press. Then I mounted it on the lathe and turned the outside of the bowl. I wanted to try a different shape, and I actually really like it! Once I had the shaped where I wanted it, I turned the foot. Then it was time to sand and oil the outside. And I flipped the bowl over so I could begin working on the inside.

I really enjoyed working with this piece, I could tell from the blank that it was going to have some amazing spalting and even a little bit of flame going on! And honestly, once it was taking shape, those came out even more!

Once I had the shape of the inside where I wanted it, it was time to sand and oil. Once that was done, I turned the bowl over to put in the cole jaws so I could remove the foot and reshape the bottom of the bowl, sand and oil it. Once I removed it from the cole jaws, I gave the entire bowl another wipe down with Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil…and it was done.

Like I said…I really enjoyed working with this piece of wood, and I know that whoever ends up with it will be very happy with it!

I have some exciting things coming down the pike…and can’t wait to share it all with you in the New Year! So look for that! Hopefully it won’t be too cold next Monday morning so I can get back up in the barn and make something else!

Hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving! And I’ll see you back up in the barn next Monday!
