It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 24
What a busy week! Last week my oldest started kindergarten. He managed to power through the week, with some hiccups along the way. And Friday I had to go and spend a few hours at the school to settle him in for the rest of the day. But it was nice to see his class and how he teacher runs everything!
This morning I got into the barn and created something that I said I would NEVER make again! Check out today’s video! ——>
It’s been quite a while since I’ve made an antique pepper mill like this. And the reason why I stopped isn’t because the turning process is hard…it’s getting the damn hardware screwed on the top!! it’s dang near impossible! But hey…when it’s Make Something Monday…you pull out all the stops!
I started by cutting this spalted tamarind to 6” in length on the chopsaw. Then I found the center of each end, hammered a point in the end that would butt up against the tail stock and drilled a hole for the woodworm screw on the other end. I then popped it on the lathe so I could round out the blank and turn down the ends to fit in the chuck jaws.
Once the ends were turned down to the right size I put the blank in the chuck jaws and used a forstner bit to drill out the center, I had to do that from each end. And hey…look at that, it met in the middle perfectly! (I won’t lie, I used to do this on the drill press and the holes didn’t always line up perfectly!) Once that was done it was time to turn the peppermill. This is the 43rd peppermill I’ve made…and I love turning the wood because each one comes out completely different! I never have a plan going in, so it’s fun to just see where the wood takes me.
Once I’ve gotten the outside to my liking, its time to sand, sand more, and sand even more. I always start off the lower grits sanding dry, then I will add some Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil and wet sand it. Once all the sanding and oiling was done, I took it to the Grizzly Bandsaw and cut off the ends that the chuck jaws held. I sanded those smooth and then it was time for the thing I hate the most…putting on the hardware. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t have the sound on…the words coming out of my mouth matched my frustration levels…if you catch my drift.
But now that it’s done…honestly…I want to make more! Oof! I tell you what…I should probably just stick with this one for now!
Hope you all have a great week ahead and I’ll see you all back up in the barn next Monday!
