It’s Monday…let’s make something! ~ Week 37

Well…it’s Week 37! Can you believe it? I can’t. But this week I had a long time customer (and friend) reach out to me to see if I was willing to do a custom order. And I figured, why don’t we make it together?!?

So, check out today’s video here. ———->

For today’s project, I grabbed two pieces of wood from my stock pile! I grabbed a piece of big leaf maple and a piece of cherry. I love being able to grab from my stock to make things! I knew I kept that wood for a reason! I started by cutting the piece of cherry to size, and ripping the piece of maple to width on the Grizzly Bandsaw. Then using my handy dandy center finder, I punch a spot in each end so I could then mount it to the lathe.

When I make several of the same thing, I tend to do the same step for each one, and then move onto the next step. So I started by turning the “foot” end of the maple piece, then turned it on the cherry. I flipped the cherry around and because to shape the piece. I turned the handle to almost the finished diameter, then worked on the dipper part. I have a parting tool that I modified (used the grinder to thin it out) so I could cut in the slots. Once I did that, I finished the handle and shaping the rest of the honey dipper. Then it was time to move on to sanding and oiling.

Once the cherry dipper was made, sanded and oiled, I used my saw to cut it from the foot. Then I repeated the process with the maple one. I’ve not made these before, so I had a little fun with this, and hopefully they like them! Ha! :)

Once the maple one was turned, sanded, oiled and cut from the foot, I used the orbital sander to round off the tops of them, then did a little hand sanding. Then I oiled each one up again…and that was that!

What do you all think? This was a quick but fun project. And I don’t normally take custom orders for things…but I was happy to do this one! I hope you all have an amazing rest of your week! And I’ll see you back up in the barn next Monday!
